Celebrating Excellence in Aviation: The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award Ceremony
On the evening of December 4th, the aviation community gathered in the Delta Air Lines Training Center Auditorium to honor 15 pilots who received the esteemed Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award.

The ceremony, organized by Rod Smith (DPS NSLI) and Delta Professional Services (DPS), was a testament to the rich history and expertise within the aviation industry.
The Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award is a prestigious recognition given to individuals who have exhibited professionalism, skill, and aviation expertise for at least 50 years. It requires recipients to hold a U.S. Civil Aviation Authority or Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) pilot certificate and have actively contributed to the field throughout their illustrious careers.
Among the 15 distinguished honorees, eight were proud employees of Delta Professional Services. Curt Helling, Mark Nichols, Cal Flanigan, Louis Belline, Ron Prox, Dean Bloom, Bob Caster, and Jim Pate stood out for their exceptional contributions to aviation, collectively amassing over 400 years of combined experience.
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures in the aviation industry, including representatives from the FAA and John Laughter, Executive Vice President and Chief of Operations at Delta Air Lines. Bob Skinner, Vice President of Operations at DPS, and Rod Smith also shared their insights and appreciation for the remarkable achievements of the recipients.
One of the highlights of the evening was a video presentation that delved into the history of the Wright Brothers and the significance of the Master Pilot Award. The evening also included a presentation that provided a glimpse into each of the recipient’s aviation careers.
Forty guests, including friends, family, and colleagues, came together to celebrate the exceptional achievements of these pilots, whose unwavering commitment has left an indelible mark on the industry. The ceremony was more than just a recognition of individual accomplishments—it was a collective celebration of the enduring spirit of aviation and the remarkable legacy forged by these outstanding pilots.
