DPS NSLI William R. Davis Receives Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award
On February 25, 2024, Captain William R. Davis, a distinguished aviator with Delta Air Lines and Delta Professional Services NSLI, was honored with the prestigious Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. The recognition is a testament to his outstanding contributions and remarkable career spanning over four decades in the aviation industry.

Born in Tuskegee, Alabama, Captain Davis’s journey into aviation began at an early age. Raised in Detroit, Michigan, he developed a passion for flight, which led him to pursue a career in aeronautics. Graduating from Cass Technical High School in Detroit, he continued his education at the United States Air Force Academy, where he honed his skills as a pilot and obtained his sailplane pilot’s license.
Following his graduation from the Air Force Academy with a Bachelor of Science degree, Captain Davis underwent pilot training at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, Oklahoma. His dedication and proficiency in flying earned him the opportunity to operate the Lockheed C130, a large Air Force cargo aircraft. Over the course of his Air Force career, he flew extensively across the globe, from the Caribbean to Europe and Central America, showcasing his expertise and commitment to excellence.
Transitioning from military service to commercial aviation, Captain Davis joined Delta Air Lines, where he embarked on a distinguished career spanning more than three decades. He served in various capacities, including as a Flight Engineer on the Boeing 727, First Officer, and Captain on the McDonnell Douglas MD-88, and First Officer, Captain, and instructor on the Boeing 767. Notably, Captain Davis piloted flights around the world in support of President Barack Obama’s international tours, demonstrating his proficiency and professionalism on the global stage.
Beyond his flying duties, Captain Davis has been an active member of the Organization of Black Aviation Professionals (OBAP), advocating for diversity and inclusion within the aviation industry. He has played a pivotal role in recruiting and mentoring women and minority students, inspiring the next generation of aviators through programs such as OBAP’s Aviation Career Education (ACE) camps.
With over 22,000 hours of flight time, including over 664.7 hours as an instructor, Captain Davis’s expertise and dedication to aviation are unparalleled. His commitment to safety, mentorship, and professional excellence exemplifies the spirit of the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award, which recognizes individuals who have exhibited professionalism, skill, and aviation expertise for at least 50 years.
In retirement, Captain Davis continues to contribute to the aviation community as a 757/767 simulator instructor with Delta Professional Services. His legacy as a trailblazer and mentor in the aviation industry will continue to inspire generations of pilots and professionals for years to come.
Captain Davis currently resides in the Atlanta area, where his passion for aviation and commitment to excellence continue to leave an enduring mark on the industry he has served with distinction.
